Here's a new Starter Ring Gear for the following models from Ford -

FORD

Ford Escort Mk1    (From 1970- 75)   (DIfferent before)

(1100cc & 1300cc)

(****** With Inertia Type Starter Motor Only ******)

The Inertia Starter Motor is the type where the pinion shoots forward into the side of the ring gear - Type "Inertia Starter Motor" into ebay and you'll see plenty of pictures.

The Pre-Engaged Starter Motor is the type where the pinion moves sideways onto the tops of the ring gears teeth  - Type "Pre Engaged Starter Motor" into ebay and you'll see plenty of pictures.

(As an extra check, for this model the Inertia Type Ring Gear has 110 Teeth and the Pre-Engaged has 135 Teeth)

This fits round your engine flywheel and the starter motor engages it's teeth to turn your engine.

With time the teeth become worn away and your starter motor will jam so that you have to rock the car back and forward in gear to free it off - then try again.

After more wear the starter motor will just skip over the teeth of the ring gear making a noise.

If either of these happen you need to buy this ring gear.

To fit this you have to take out the gearbox..

Here's some Fitting Instructions from the Manufacturer -

Don't try to remove the old Ring Gear by knocking it off sideways, this could damage the small lip on some flywheels.

The old Ring Gear should first be split by drilling or with a hacksaw and then split with a chisel. When expanding the new Ring Gear it must be heated slowly and uniformly and never to above 200 degrees C. An oven or heater is the best way, the manufacturers don't recommend a blow lamp (But everyone does).

After placing the new expanded ring gear on the flywheel it should be tapped into place with a copper hammer or an ordinary hammer with a wood drift. The Ring Gear should be left to cool slowly in air - Never quenched in water or even with an air fan. Hurried cooling may cause the Ring Gear to crack.

The correct position for the chamfer on the teeth must be observed. The Chamfer should be on the leading edge of the teeth in the direction of rotation and should be on the side of the ring to which the starter pinion approaches.

It is always advisable to check the pinion shaft to see if it's bent and that the starter pinion teeth are free from damage and that it moves freely intro the engaged position.
